About Me

My photo
Welcome to the Backwoods Art Quilts Blog! I have been drawing, sewing, painting, and quilting for many years, but fiber art is my passion. I love all the creative options available to the fiber artist - there are so many ways to express an idea, a cherished photo or a favorite memory! It combines all the creative ventures I've been doing all my life - as well as dyeing fabric and altering photos. There is so much more to learn and so many things to try! I will share my journey - much of which will be trial and error! as I continue to learn everything I can about fiber art! Please visit my Etsy site - http://www.etsy.com/shop/BackWoodsArtQuilts

Quilting Arts Magazine 'Friendship and Devotion' Reader Challenge

Quilting Arts Magazine 'Friendship and Devotion' Reader Challenge

I love entering the challenges from Quilting Arts Magazine. They let me push my creativity and try new techniques. The latest challenge "Friendship and Devotion" had me stumped. The finished quilt could only be 8" x 10" and the description "Strong friendships create some of the most powerful relationships we have in life" made me think about all the friends I have had past and present and what those friendships meant to me. But after spending weeks thinking about it, I decided to make my dog, Bear, the central character in my creation. He is always close by, he forgives and forgets any and all mistakes I have ever made, he is happy just to be in my company, and I can tell him anything - he'll never repeat it!

I wrote the poem and used a photo I took of Bear. I created the piece by altering my original photo and adding my words. I printed the image on organza silk. Then I used Derwent Inktense pencils (love them!) to enhance the image. I drew another image in black and white on 100% white cotton to place under the organza. I wanted the image to have a soft, translucent look. Then I quilted it and created a pillowcase finish (new for me!)

This is how it came out:
