About Me

My photo
Welcome to the Backwoods Art Quilts Blog! I have been drawing, sewing, painting, and quilting for many years, but fiber art is my passion. I love all the creative options available to the fiber artist - there are so many ways to express an idea, a cherished photo or a favorite memory! It combines all the creative ventures I've been doing all my life - as well as dyeing fabric and altering photos. There is so much more to learn and so many things to try! I will share my journey - much of which will be trial and error! as I continue to learn everything I can about fiber art! Please visit my Etsy site - http://www.etsy.com/shop/BackWoodsArtQuilts

Crayon Alphabet Quilts

Crayon Alphabet Quilts

Who doesn't like to color? I saw an article using crayons to create art/wall quilts - so I had to try it. I decided to draw animals to correspond with the alphabet - The photo above shows my "C is for Cow" in progress.

A is for Alligator
I drew the animals and their background and letter using a fine tip fabric marker. Then I used regular crayons to color in the scenes - ironing them using parchment paper to set the color. Coloring with crayons allowed me to build up colors and shading and was easy to do and relaxing!

B is for Bear

I used free-motion quilting to sketch in details and fill up the sky and background with meandering stitches on each of the four crayon quilts. The four I created are "A is for Alligator", "B is for Bear", "C is for Cow", and "D is for Dinosaur" and they are available to purchase in my Etsy shop at www.etsy.com/shop/BackwoodsArtQuilts

D is for Dinosaur

I decided to experiment with a wrap-over border using fusible, then I free-motion sewed the border down with matching thread. It worked well and was easy to do - much better than creating a border and binding!

Here is a view of the completed Cow quilt.
